Save Our Supplements campaign -

Taken from: Consumers for Health Choice (CHC), an independent consumer organisation.

The ongoing campaign to ‘Save Our Supplements’ made an impact when postcards were duly collected from health stores, filled in and despatched to Westminster.

MPs complained that they were unable to escape their daily postbag. You, the public did that ~ you caused quite a stir and helped focus minds on how serious the Food Supplements Directive is.

We need to act again. Please find time to write a letter to the Commissioner ~ Mr Dalli - click here for more details This is a prepared, suggested letter that is easy to copy and/or personalise.

Mr Dalli is quite new in his post and we have no idea at the moment if he is sympathetic to the British appeals to keep our supplements available – or not. But we cannot wait to find out!

Time is of the essence…

This may be the last role of the dice for vitamin & mineral supplement users and members of the public who care about freedom of choice. It is essential that Commissioner Dalli knows that too.

We all need his commitment to deliver what has previously been promised – namely to keep our safe and effective supplements available for all – and at beneficial levels.

Please don’t think for a moment that all this is a waste of time. It isn’t.

We must leave Mr Dalli in no doubt of the strength of feeling across Britain and that we are relying on him to find a way to keep our supplements available.

What we don’t want is for the whole EU market to dumb down to low and meaningless levels. Setting dose levels for vitamins and minerals is now top of the Brussels agenda. Time is running out so, let’s send a strong message to Mr Dalli – and do it now!

Sue Croft ~ Director, Consumers for Health Choice

Do you own a cat, or perhaps you prefer a dog? There are three categories that a person can fall into regarding animals; cat people, dog people, and neither.
Furthermore, those who are neither can be grouped into one of the previous categories based on the type of animal that they prefer as a pet. Believe it or not, the human brain predetermines whether you are a dog or cat person!

Does the Brain Determine Whether You Are a Cat or Dog Person?

“There is a widely held cultural belief that the pet species—dog or cat—with which a person has the strongest affinity says something about the individual’s personality,“ says Sam Gosling, psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin, who conducted the study with graduate student Carson Sandy.

This study conducted earlier in the year learnt that people who prefer dogs are generally outgoing and social able, whilst those who prefer cats tend to not be, but are open to socialisation. Cat people also tend to be much more philosophical than dog people.

When looking at the general personalities of cats and dogs, this makes sense; dogs live to please you, cats don’t. Dogs will run to the door and greet you, while cats will wait for you to come to them.

“This research suggests there are significant differences on major personality traits between dog people and cat people,” he says. “Given the tight psychological connections between people and their pets, it is likely that the differences between dogs and cats may be suited to different human personalities.”

As part of the research 4,565 volunteers were asked whether they were dog people, cat people, neither or both. The same team were given a 44-item assessment that measured them on the so-called ‘Big Five’ personality dimensions which psychologists often use to study personalities.

According to the findings:

46% of respondents described themselves as dog people, while 12% said they were cat people. Almost 28% said they were both and 15% said they were neither.

Dog people were generally about 15% more extraverted, 13% more agreeable and 11% more conscientious than cat people.

Cat people were generally about 12% more neurotic and 11% more open than dog people.

Which Are You, a ‘Dog or Cat Person’?

Typically, it is easy to determine whether you prefer dogs or cats, but some people will keep both. Some people have an instant dislike or discomfort for one species or the other, but feel joy when thinking about or being in contact with a dog or a cat. This is the truest way to determine whether you are a dog or cat person is to assess which one are you the happiest with, and which one makes you smile.

An important part of life-long wellbeing is being prepared for all situations.

If a friend asks you meet them for lunch, or your partner wants to whisk you off to a restaurant, there’s no need to stress about what it’s going to do to your diet. Going out for a meal with family or friends is usually a time of celebration and can be treated as such.

Regular restaurant visits or summer BBQ’s however will mean that you have to be much more careful and conscious, making informed and deliberate food choices.

Here are the Top 10 Health & Wellbeing Boot Camp Tips:

1. When you arrive at your destination, ask for a glass of water straight away. Still water – no ice and twenty minutes before you eat is perfect, as you will not be flushing away your precious digestive enzymes.

2. Don’t starve yourself beforehand – either to make room for more or to make up for eating out. Either way is not your healthiest option! Remember that it is not about gorging as much as possible, even if it’s a tempting ‘eat-all-you-can’ buffet!

3. Enjoy the whole process; remember to choose the food that feels good, the living raw food that offers vibrancy and life-force. After enjoying your selection process, appreciate the colours and textures of your food. Then simply enjoy each mouthful – savouring it, chewing it slowly to maximize on your nutritional absorption.

4. A trip to a restaurant or summer BBQ does not need to translate into mass over-consumption of alcohol and fizzy drinks. Instead order water or herb teas. Chinese restaurants generally have lovely green or jasmine tea, or if you want wine, choose organic as it is cleaner, with fewer chemicals.

5. Don’t be swayed by what other people are ordering – make your own choices that are right for you and stick with them.

6. Vegetable and light soups are great for filling up on, but avoid the cream-based ones. The same is true of pasta dishes – tomato-based sauces would normally be free from cream, and even better with a squeeze of lemon juice to break up the acidity!

7. Ask how the food is cooked. Don’t be afraid to check whether the dish you fancy can be cooked without butter, and ask them to serve it without the dressing – request olive oil and lemon juice instead. If eating Chinese food, ask that they do NOT use monosodium glutamate –a flavour enhancing chemical which is in all junk food. Instead they can use a good quality Tamari, Shoyu or Soya sauce for a fuller flavour, or extra garlic or ginger. There are always alternatives.

8. If the menu seems to be limited in selection, check out the starters and side dishes for healthier options. You can usually order a selection of starters and side dishes as a substitute for the actual main course, such as side order of streamed vegetables, with sides of salad, hummus and olives, delicious!).

9. Eat slowly. Chat between mouthfuls, and put your cutlery down between each mouthful too. Don’t be swayed if everyone else is eating faster than you. Eat in a manner that you know will serve you best. Remember, the more you chew your food, the more nutrition you get from it. Observe that those who wolf their food down and then suffer with wind and digestion problems!

10. Desserts in most restaurants are normally far too big and rich. You could always share desserts among your guests – sharing gives you a chance to taste and sample a couple of different desserts, and if it’s a cosy meal for two you’re enjoying, it can be quite a bonding experience! Again though, don’t invest heavily in the creamy desserts, as you may suffer with a dairy driven mucus hangover the next day!

Bearing these points in mind will mean that eating out need not be a problem when you’re eating more healthily – preparation and awareness is the key!

A pleasurable meal spent with special people in your life is a joyful occasion. Your carefully-honed awareness and appreciation of that meal will absolutely add to it.

Food Matters DVD feature length documentary film is a hard-hitting, fast-paced look at our current state of health.

Despite the billions of dollars of funding and research into new so-called cures, we continue to suffer from a raft of chronic illnesses and everyday maladies. Patching up an over-toxic and over-indulgent population with a host of toxic therapies and nutrient-sparse foods is definitely not helping the situation.

Food Matters DVD informs you on the best choices you can make for you and your family’s health. In a collection of interviews with leading Nutritionists, Naturopaths, Scientists, M.D.’s and Medical Journalists you will discover…
• How to use food as medicine
• Who needs vitamins?
• Is organic better?
• How safe is our food?
• Natural treatments for lowering Cholesterol
• Foods that fight Anxiety and Depression
• Natural therapies for Cancer
• Which drugs might do more harm than good?
• The best ways to detox, lose weight, and keep it off!

“Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food” – Hippocrates

That is the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial documentary film Food Matters from Producer-Directors James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch.

With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what’s wrong with our malnourished bodies, it’s no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. Food Matters sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide ’sickness industry’ and gives people some scientifically verifiable solutions for overcoming illness naturally.

In what promises to be the most contentious idea put forward, the filmmakers have interviewed several world leaders in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to help with chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.

The focus of the film is in helping us rethink the belief systems fed to us by our modern medical and health care establishments. The interviewees point out that not every problem requires costly, major medical attention and reveal many alternative therapies that can be more effective, more economical, less harmful and less invasive than conventional medical treatments.

Watch the Food Matters trailer now, and empower your food choices!

If you buy organic vegetables, chances are it’s because you want better nutrition. But if you’re putting them in your microwave to cook them – you’re wasting your money!

Many people are now spending more on organic vegetables, but they are not getting their money’s worth when they decide to cook them in the microwave.

Research is showing that cooking vegetables in the microwave can be a problem.

FACT: As much as up to 97% of antioxidants and other nutrients are destroyed when cooking with a microwave.

It’s the phytochemicals in vegetables that work to ward off diseases and illnesses, such as cancer. But, if they are cooked in a microwave – you’re essentially killing your food.

What can you do to make sure that you get all the nutrition benefits from your vegetables?

Consider eating them raw, as this allows you to get the most nutrition from them. It’s particularly easy in this glorious summer weather to enjoy an abundance of salad and raw vegetables.

Another option is to lightly steam your veg if you want to eat them warm. But please note; the less processing and cooking that your vegetables go through, the better they are for you.

So stop microwaving your vegetables and get all the nutrition you can out of them by eating them raw or lightly steamed.

For some raw food ideas check out Nutri-Health’s Sprouting Starter Pack, growing and eating your own sprouts couldn’t be easier or more nutritious. Plus we have an amazing selection of Organic Seaweed Products which will further boost your nutritional intake - seaweed is delicious mixed into a salad or with lightly steamed veg – just drizzle with some olive oil, a squeeze of lemon, and a sprinkling of Shelled Hemp Seeds. As Mr Ramsey would say “Done!”

Whilst you may only think of seaweed as the stuff in the sea that gets caught on your feet when wading, this claim is being supported by investigations that reveal that seaweed, a variety of algae, contains more calcium than cheese, more fibre than in prunes and more iron than a steak – weight for weight!

Scientists have also recently concluded that seaweed offer perhaps the broadest range of minerals of any food found on earth, as they contain virtually all the nutrients found in the ocean and the very same minerals found in human blood.

Furthermore, seaweed is an excellent source of the B-vitamin folate, and magnesium, as well as a great supply of iron, iodine, calcium, phosphorous and the B-vitamins riboflavin and pantothenic acid. Seaweed also contains vitamins A, B1, C, E, and protein.

In addition, seaweed contains significant amounts of lignans, which are plant compounds with cancer-protective properties. The most recent studies on seaweed revealed that its bioactive substances aid in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol, plus its ability to deal with free radicals that are the cause of cancer.

Seaweed to tackle the rise in obesity

Seaweed could hold the key to tackling obesity after it was found it reduces fat digestion by more than 75 per cent, new research has shown.

A team of scientists led by Dr Iain Brownlee and Prof Jeff Pearson have found that dietary fibre in one of the world’s largest commercially-used seaweed could reduce the amount of fat available for absorption by the body by around 75 per cent.

The Newcastle University team found that Alginate – a natural fibre found in sea kelp – stops the digestion of fat better than most anti-obesity treatments currently available over the counter.

“Obesity is an ever-growing problem and many people find it difficult to stick to diet and exercise plans in order to lose weight,” explains Dr Brownlee.

Alginates (fibres) have great potential for weight management – adding them to food also has the added advantage of boosting overall fibre content.

What is a dietary fibre?
Dietary fibre would be scientifically classified as a group of carbohydrates of plant origin that escape digestion by the human gut.

“Actually, there’s still quite a lot of confusion about fibre,” says Dr Brownlee. “I think most people would describe it as roughage – the bit of your food that keeps you regular and is vital for a healthy gut.”

“Both of these facts are true but the notion that all fibre is the same and that it simply goes through your system without having an effect is wrong.”

Fibre is made up of a wide range of different molecules called polysaccharides and although it is not digested by the human gut, it both directly and indirectly affects a number of bodily processes.

Dr Brownlee adds: “These initial findings suggest alginates could offer a very real solution in the battle against obesity.”

Research by Brough, Rees and Crawford et al. recently published in the British Journal of Nutrition indicates that vitamin supplements may be of benefit in pregnancy. The study was a double-blind, randomised and placebo controlled trial aimed at investigating the effect of taking nutrient and vitamin supplements in low income, multi-ethnic, pregnant women. The supplementation began with the first three months of pregnancy, and included iron, folate, thiamine and vitamin D. The researchers examined the effects of supplementation on infant birth weight and gestation age at birth. The results of this preliminary study suggests that multiple micronutrient supplements are associated with a decreased incidence of small for gestational age babies in mothers who continue to take them for the duration of their pregnancy.

This is great news for mums who want to further support themselves and baby during pregnancy. With not so many nutrients being available in todays modern foods, topping up with a good multi vitamin and mineral supplement such as MultiPlus by Nutri-Health, is a great way to add to your nutritional requirement.

Superfoods like Nutri-Health’s Maca Powder are also known to be very supportive before, during and after pregnancy. Many mothers feel a great benefit by taking Maca Powder when they are breastfeeding too.

Pregnancy is a delicate time for both mother and child - supporting good health in both is an obvious choice make.

With the festive season upon us how do you enjoy yourself and not pile on extra weight?

Rather than over do it on the food this Christmas you can support yourself with our fantastic Weight Management Supplement Formula Power and Lipolean Plus

Another answer lies in watching your brain and your blood sugar balance.

By keeping your blood sugar even, you won’t experience a gnawing emptiness or an uncontrollable appetite. The trick is to eat a healthy protein with carbohydrate and have healthy snacks when your blood sugar dips. Remember not to eat too much, stop before you feel full. Gently graze.

Should your digestion be sluggish, use effective digestive enzymes such as Zyme-Rite as they may help support your digestion and ease away that uncomfortable feeling.

Regarding alcohol, the trick is not to drink (too much!) on an empty stomach. It’s far better to have some food in you with, or shortly after alcohol. Next day grogginess is generally reactions to yeast, rather than the alcohol. Champagne (or champagne method) is yeast free while wine, beer and lager are not.

Juice up your Christmas cocktails by adding fresh lime to Marguerita – packing it with vitamin C, a Rum Cocktail made with real juice, or a Mojito made with a natural sugar such as ‘Xylitol’ or Agave Syrup (both available in supermarkets) are all sweeter choices. If you drink wine then get the good stuff, organic where possible as there are many chemicals in the cheap stuff.

If you find yourself entering the New Year lacking in ‘mojo’ – then kick-start 2010 with the Weight Loss and Wellbeing Boot Camp – It’s FREE, and its far more than meets the eye!

Boot Camp starts Jan 4th 2010 – prompt!

Nutri-Health’s Exclusive and World Class Effective Weight Loss Management Supplement Lipolean Plus has just surpassed itself!

Lipolean Plus is a global best seller and has been for well over a decade. We believe that the ongoing success of Lipolean Plus is because we keep our eyes on the latest research for the best and effective ingredients we can find. This is what makes our products work!

This newly formulated Weight Loss supplement Lipolean Plus now contains two brand new ingredients with existing favourites:

New! Cacti-Nea™ is developed from prickly pear cactus fruit (Opuntia ficus indica) and has revealed original antioxidant and diuretic properties. Preliminary studies have already showed that Cacti-Nea™ weight management potential is linked to the elimination of excess fluids.

New! Green Tea is a well known powerful antioxidant, which also burns fat and stimulates the metabolism – accelerating Weight Loss.

Chitosan is a very simple substance which has been around for ages. It is taken from chitin, a polysaccharide. Chitosan is a special fiber which is able to “soak up” or absorb anywhere from six to ten times its weight in fat and oils. In substance, it is chemically similar to the plant fiber, cellulose. However, Chitosan is able to significantly bind with fat molecules and convert them into a form which the human body does not absorb. It claims to affect the fat prior to it reaching the stomach and thus the fat never has a chance to be metabolised. It prevents the absorption and storage of fat by converting into a gel which “traps” the fat. In some sort, it creates a “grease ball” from this excess fat, which is too large to be absorbed by the body. It thus becomes an inert substance and is excreted in the stool. Chitosan fibre is unlike other fibres in that it carries a positive ionic charge. Since lipids, fats, and bile acids all possess negative charges, there is a chemical bond between the two and thus they attract naturally to one another. This unique ability is what makes Chitosan so remarkable.

Vitamin C recent research suggests that there is more successful weight loss if you eat more fresh citrus and other fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C. Not because Vitamin C is the new weight loss wonder drug, but the discovery that consuming an inadequate amount of the vitamin can hinder weight loss!

Enzymes Lipase has the ability to assist the body in the breaking down of fat, controlling cholesterol and balancing the fatty acids. Protease assists protein digestion and, combined with lipase, creates a support for the liver and pancreas. Protease will also fortify the blood and serve as a natural diuretic.

Nutri-Health’s Weight Loss Management supplement Lipolean Plus is not just good – it’s really good! …OR YOUR MONEY BACK!

We are so confident of this products effectiveness that we are offer you a ‘No risk, No quibble’ money back guarantee*

* (60-day money back guarantee from date of sale)
