It is thought the antioxidant vitamins called Anthocyanins in the juice helps the body to resist damage and repair itself, which could be relevant for people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis
- CherryActive Capsules are made using very high quality freeze dried powdered Montmorency cherry skins in a 100% vegetarian capsule with no additives or binding agents
- CherryActive Capsules won the prestigious Best Product Award for Supplements and Remedies at the Natural Trade Show
- CherryActive Capsule powder is made only from the skins of Montmorency cherries to optimise the nutrients in each easy-to-swallow capsule. The skins of fruit contain the greatest concentration of nutrients. Freeze-drying protects their important nutrients
Ongoing scientific studies back up the anecdotal reports from a variety of sports professionals elite and amateur athletes and regular gym users that taking CherryActive products as part of an appropriate training and nutrition programme can help the body optimise recovery rates.
In one study runners who took tart cherry juice before and after the race recovered better than those taking a dummy drink.
Glyn Howatson exercise physiologist and laboratory director in the School of Psychology and Sports Sciences Northumbria University examined the properties of Montmorency Cherries in 20 athletes who ran a marathon.
The runners drank either the cherry juice or a placebo drink twice a day for five days before the race and two days afterwards. The experts found the runners taking cherry juice recovered their strength faster in the 48-hours following the race.
“Participating in long-distance endurance events such as a marathon causes a degree of muscle damage and inflammation for the runners. It takes several days to recover and during that period the runner’s ability to conduct physical activity can be vastly inhibited”.
“The phytochemicals in particular anthocyanins found in Montmorency cherries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidating properties which the research has shown to be effective in helping exercises to recover from strenuous physical activity”.
England Rugby choose CherryActive®
CherryActive products have been selected by England Rugby to support the players’ recovery in the current 2010 Six Nations Championship. CherryActive are delighted that their antioxidant-rich products have been selected by world-class athletes:
England players are among a host of top-flight athletes to discover the powerful recovery benefits of CherryActive. Several leading premiership football teams British tennis players and British Olympic cycling stars have also adopted CherryActive as their preferred sports recovery supplement.
Recent research shows how supplementation with CherryActive can speed recovery from strenuous training and sports
Current Research
A team of highly-regarded sports performance research professionals has been studying whether muscles recover faster from strenuous exercise when the diet is supplemented with CherryActive Concentrate versus supplementation with a placebo.
The double blind placebo-controlled crossover designed study took ten well-conditioned male subjects who participate regularly at Rugby Football or Tae Kwon Do. The participants consumed CherryActive or a Placebo before and after a strenuous bout of exercises designed to cause damage and soreness to the selected muscle groups.
Blood tests and other examinations were taken before and at set intervals during the following days after the damaging exercise to study the muscles’ strength and function and their recovery. Muscle soreness inflammatory markers and other measures related to recovery were also taken.
Protocol 10 male well-trained participants in intermittent high intensity sports (rugby football taekwondo) completed two 10 day trials with either CherryActive (2 x 30 ml per day) or isoenergetic placebo supplementation. The trial was double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over in design
On day 8 participants completed a one leg knee extension protocol with accentuated eccentric phase designed to replicate an intensive strength training session (10 sets of 10 reps at 80% 1RepMax)
Measures of muscle function (isometric muscle strength EMG) muscle soreness (analogue scale pressure pain threshold) muscle damage (creatine kinase) oxidative damage of proteins (protein carbonyls nitrotyrosine) and anti-oxidant status were taken pre- immediately 24 and 48 h post-exercise
Results summary
- Recovery of muscle function was significantly faster with CherryActive consumption. Muscle soreness tended to be lower during CherryActive trials
- Exercise-induced muscle damage was similar for both trials
- There was less exercise-induced oxidative damage to proteins with CherryActive consumption
Conclusion
CherryActive supplementation resulted in significantly faster recovery of muscle function and a tendency for less muscle soreness after completing a bout of damaging eccentric exercise than when consuming an isoenergetic placebo. This may be due to the reduction in protein oxidative damage as a consequence of CherryActive consumption. The extent of muscle damage as indicated by serum creatine kinase activity was similar between trials.
This suggests that although the supplement speeds functional recovery the extent of muscle damage which may underlie chronic training adaptations is not compromised.
